Official badge of the WHA (World Hockey Association)

Size of this badge is 1 1/2 cm

The WHA (World Hockey Association) was a professional hockey league that existed from 1972 to 1979 as a competitor to the NHL. It attracted many star players, including Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull, and Gordie Howe, and offered better salaries and opportunities for European players.

Several Czechoslovak hockey players joined the WHA because the league provided better financial conditions and the chance to play outside the communist regime. After the 1978–79 season, the WHA merged with the NHL, with four teams—Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets—being accepted into the NHL.
